So Mr. Cheney is over in Georgia, telling Putin that Georgia will be part of the Alliance (NATO). And McCain just picked the governor of Alaska to be his running mate. Alaska is next to Russia. If Cheney and his gang were planning to invade Russia, it would be great to have Alaska's governor under their direct control. An invasion of Russia might succeed because the people there know that Putin or the next leader might turn it into a dictatorship. If Cheney et al keep poking the Russian bear until it has to strike out, they could then hold up Putin's reactions as sufficient reason to invade/squelch. And it would be for their own good, of course.

As the collective blindness/mania about climate change slowly turns to panic, we've now reached the stage where radical measures to stop the inexorable slide into climatic chaos are being seriously proposed. Well, great - let the global brainstorming begin.

Except, the problem was caused (mostly) by people. And it's incredibly huge. So isn't it a bit arrogant and ignorant to imagine that we'd be able to fix it by doing things similar to the actions that set this climate change in motion?

For instance, the idea of injecting sulfur into the upper atmosphere to create a haze that would reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the earth's surface - at first glance it seems reasonable. But how much would be enough, or too much? What measures might be required after it's done, to ameliorate the additional problems it causes?

What if it's decided by the "world leaders" to do this, and the result is a massive global cooling? That could easily be the result.

It's really too bad that we can't seem to get together and make a major move to save our asses; for instance, installing a giant solar power generation facility in the Southwest U.S. Using current technology, only one square mile of solar generators could supply all the energy needs for the United States. More carbon dioxide would be generated setting it up, but once it was in place, it would be very clean.

From what I can see, the pace of climate change far exceeds humanity's ability to respond appropriately. Might as well get ready for one helluva wild ride.
